Dart BBQ done.....buuurrrrrrppppp!
Well for those of you who missed it (and
quite a few did) we all had a great time at the annual Awards BBQ this
past weekend. With the exception of the out of control angry homeless
man screaming profanities across the way, the day was a lot of fun for
everyone. Lots to update everyone on who missed it as we discussed and
decided on some major changes for the league.
First off was the election of new
officers. Isaac Oltmans was elected as President for this year. John
Craig will be acting Vice President. Gary Braun will be secretary and
will be taking care off all of the stats and the Bull. I (Phil) will be
website and also ADO Rep. And Andy Clare will remain treasurer.
We talked a lot about the need to build
the league back up. We have a couple of new venues on the horizon. Once
those get confirmed we will be announcing those. In the mean time we
have at least one, maybe 2 new teams that want to form out of the Monday
Night Blind Draws we hold at Firestone. It was voted on that if thy
indeed want to join the league that we would allow them to and also
allow Firestone as a home venue. This would mean that potentially twice
a season a SB based team would need to carpool up to Buellton for a
match. Obviously this is much more of a commitment from the Firestone
teams as they would be traveling to SB 80% of the time. But it was felt
that if this was going to be a make or break in getting more teams in,
everyone was willing to make some sacrifices to build the league back
up.
Also it was voted on that we will go back
to a Cup playoff twice a year.
We also decided that we are going to
increase dues for everyone to $35. This will allow us to purchase all
new boards (and all the SAME boards) for every venue. These will be
owned by the league and it will be the teams responsibility to make sure
the boards are put away after every match. These will ONLY be used by
league members on league nights!
So some really good positive things cam
from the meeting. If you have complaints about any of them, too bad. You
should have been at the meeting to help decide all of these important
things. But I think the overall feeling was really positive and we
should be on our way to getting this league back up to where it was when
I first joined.
The starting date will be determined as
soon as we lock in the new venues and solidify all of the teams. If you
plan on starting a new team, please let us know ASAP as we need to find
places for everyone.

Dart games
ignite friendly competition

So is it the money and beer, or the win
which brings an interesting collection
of dart enthusiasts to the
Firestone-Walker Brewery every Monday
night?
This was the question I posed to my
fellow tournament participants last week
as we queued up to take a few practice
throws between rounds.
“The prizes are nice, but I like the
win,” said Mark Lane, who is usually
found throwing soft-tips at DJ’s in
Lompoc.
“Oh it’s the beer and cash,” asserted
Isaac Oltmans, who has participated
since the start of the tournament some
seven months ago.
“I make sure
there’s no beer in the house Monday just
to motivate me.”
What began as a weekly individual
tournament between friends, castaways
from the established Santa Barbara Darts
League, began attracting more area
players.
“The night can vary from anywhere from 8
to 20 players,” according to Phil
O’Neill, the founder of the event.
They gather in the back room of the
brewery, where up to four steel tip dart
boards can be put to use, with ample
space left for spectators, or eliminated
contestants to sit and enjoy the
competition, perhaps with beer in hand.
O’Neill calls it one of the best venues
for darts in the area.
“Tons of room, we have our own stereo to
play whatever music we want and we don't
get in the way of any of the patrons or
each other. It's a very comfortable room
and we're so happy Firestone has embraced
the darts and all of us.”
I had attended one of the first Monday
night tournaments, and was quickly
eliminated in the one-on-one format. The
beer was tasty though.
Now with more people attending, the
tournament features a random pairing,
double elimination system. My gain was
Oltmans’ loss when he and I were paired
together.
Oltmans, together with O’Neill had the
idea to start up a dart night a year
ago. The British half of the Adam
Firestone/David Walker brewery loved the
idea, and the event was born.
Relatively new to the sport — four years
of throwing — Oltmans told me he is
striving for professional success.
“This year I’ve done four national
tournaments,” he said, expressing hope
to become a Top 100 player like O’Neill
within the year.
I did him no favors in advancing his
craft.
In the game of 501, players attempt to
earn exactly 501 points before their
opponent can. Triple 20 is the scoring
zone of choice, as it offers the largest
possible score of 180. I would toss out
something resembling my shoe size,
leaving the left-handed Oltmans to try
and make up ground for our team. That he
did, and with superior accuracy, carried
team G.I. to the semifinals where we
were beaten soundly by the eventual
champs.
Sent
to the consolation bracket, we (meaning
Oltmans) could claw our way back into
the championship match with one win.
Standing in our way was the team of
Tammi Sherman, one of the newer players
in the group, and O’Neill.
My proudest moment of the night came
when I somehow managed to toss a 101
during the first game of 501. I credit
the throw, called a “ton and one” in
darts lingo, to the beer consumption.
Team G.I. won that opening game thanks
to a flashy bull’s-eye finish by
Oltmans. The opposing team came right
back and won handily at Cricket, setting
up a winner-take-all third game of 501.
We had a slight lead when Tammi nailed a
double-19’s to grab the win.
Tammi’s team would eventually lose to
the team including her husband Ed
Sherman.
“I didn’t play at first. He’d bring me
here and I would just shoot if they were
short of people,” recalls Tammi. “Now
I’m hooked.”
Hooked enough to threaten Ed with
sleeping in the barn for winning.
The Shermans and several of the other
participants regularly play soft-tip at
the Maverick Saloon in Santa Ynez.
Lane, who sports an almost underhanded
throwing style, literally and
figuratively owns the soft-tip board at
DJ’s. Working in Buellton across the
street from the brewery has made his
attendance at the Monday night tourneys
automatic.
Still others, like Pat “PK” Keith, live
and play in Santa Maria, but still make
the trip.
“I’m here every Monday night. It’s just
a good time and usually my son and
daughter come too,” said Keith.
Keith has played for over 30 years,
competed internationally and has won two
soft-tip championships.
“There’s some really good shooters here.
But any given day, anybody here can win
just depending on how they’re feeling
and how they’re throwing.”
Case in point, Tammi and I making it to
the final three of the tournament (with
more than a little help from our
partners of course).
“Perfect,” was how Oltmans described the
Firestone-Walker gatherings for
beginners and newcomers. By way of
example, a woman who had only competed
twice before, at that moment managed to
throw a 180 in her team’s match of 501.
As numbers grow for the informal Monday
night events, O’Neill hopes to form
league teams.
“I run the Santa Barbara Dart
Association and we're talking about
maybe even combining some of the new
teams with the league down there,” he
said.
Until then, it is just a collection of
like-minded dart players, getting
together for some fun once a week.
After being knocked out of the
tournament, I finish my beer while
listening to the soft “thunk” of the
darts hitting the board. I watch Ed beat
Tammi, though he may regret it later,
gather my six-pack prize and turn to go.
I have to drink it all before next
Monday, you know, for the motivation.

ADO Masters Regional
Mick Farrell and Phil O'Neill moved on
after the Regional Qualifier here in Santa Barbara and made the trip
down to Anaheim over this past weekend. The competition was very good as
usual but only 7 players participated. Unfortunately Mick had a slightly
"off" day for Mick but he did play well and managed to take some crucial
legs off of the guys who were at the top. I (Phil) was playing great and
had it not been for too many missed opportunities at outs would have
been the person moving on to the Nationals. Sitting on 40 with a
potential 15 dart game against the eventual winner John Denich sitting
at 248 I managed to throw 12 darts turning my 40 into "X" and allowed
John back in to take the out. I did that 2 out of the 3 games we
played!!! Arrrgghh. I did the same thing against Mick as I gave him 2
out of 3 on games that were all mine to win had been been able to hit my
out. John ended up winning the event with 14 legs won, Marvin (?) had 13
and took 2nd, Doug McDonough had 12 legs and took 3rd, I had 11 legs and
took 4th and Mick had 10 legs and took 5th.

BBQ and Awards Picnic
The date has been set for this years BBQ
and Awards picnic. This year were going back to a picnic again instead
of being at someone's house! We're going back to our old spot at Oak
Park next to the Tennis Courts. Should be a great day for all of us. As
usual, family members are welcome and encouraged to join us. We will
have our yearly General Meeting where we will make all of the decisions
for any changes for the upcoming year. Following having a great BBQ meal
we will have a Blind Draw dart tourney so bring your darts!

Priestley Exhibition a Hit!
A huge thank you to everyone who made the
effort to attend this years Dennis Priestley exhibition at Firestone
Walker Brewery in Buellton. I was a little bummed that there wasn't more
support from the Santa Barbara players. This kind of an event takes a
lot of effort to put on and to not have more of our league support it
was very disappointing. The SBDA members who showed up were Andy Clare
(thanks for driving Andy!), Michael Stowell and Gary Braun. We actually
had more people from Ventura come up to support it than from our league
in SB!
Everyone I spoke to had a great time.
Dennis put on quite a show hitting 7 - T80's on the day. As usual, no
one took a leg off of him. Dennis played a total of 25 games. Some of
you may have seen the coverage on Fox Sports. They did a story the day
prior to the event and they were also there to cover the event on
Saturday. Also after the event we had a blind draw tourney. Lots of fun.
If you would like to see photos of the
event, click on the photos tab on the left side of the screen.
For those who missed it, that may have
been your last chance to have participated as I'm deciding not to do
anymore of these. Too much work and time and not enough support.
(6-8-06)
Dennis Priestley only 2 weeks away! Don't
miss it!

(6-3-06)
Santa Barbara Victorious
There was no way we were going to lose
two straight to Ventura and lose we did not! Unfortunately we were
missing some of our key players to come down with us due to conflicts in
schedules but we did very well all things considered. The Santa Barbara
line up was Phil O'Neill, Mick Farrell, Erik Schiefen, Armando Adlawan,
John Craig, Paul Dooley, Al Benevente and Gary Braun.
We started out the match, as usual, losing the first 2 team 1001 games.
Seems we never win those! But we picked it up big time in the singles
Corkers Choice taking 9 out of 10 singles matches. We then moved on to
Doubles Cricket and we took 4 out of 5 giving us the outright win prior
to even playing the Doubles 501 games. As is a standard practice we
played out all of the games regardless and the final score was Santa
Barbara 15, Ventura 7.
The trophy will once again be in it's proper place residing in Dargan's.
And we don't plan on letting it leave again for a long time. The next
match against Ventura will be in Santa Barbara at Dargan's and we will
be shooting for sometime at the beginning of January.

Dooley, Phil O'Neill, Erik Schiefen, John Craig, Armando Adlawan, Al

Final Standings Posted
Congrats to Curly's All Stars who won 1st
place this year. This is the first time in many years that a team has
won first place without even having to play the last match. The run for
2nd place was extremely close and the Dubliners edged out Dargan's by a
one extra leg win. Also for the first time in a couple of years, Phil
O'Neill won the MVP for the league.
Playoffs will begin next week with
Curly's getting a BYE. The playoff schedule is posted on the final Bull.
Information on the upcoming BBQ awards
will be announced soon
(5-31-06)
SB vs. Ventura All Stars
The All Star event with SB vs Ventura
will take place once again this weekend at the Benchwarmer in Ventura on
Saturday June 3rd at 12 Noon. We are planning on taking back out trophy
this time and would love to have anyone who is interested to come down
and cheer on the team and or help chalk some matches. Hope to see a lot
of you there!
(5-19-06)
Playoff schedule
The draw was done. Playoffs will begin
June 6th. The schedule is below:
Curly's All Stars - BYE
Match "A" - Dargan's vs. Wires @ Dargan's Bar
Match "B" - Dubliners vs Your Mom @ Dargan's Pool
Match "C" - Showtime vs Coprolites @ James Joyce
Tuesday - June 13th
Winner of "A" plays Curly's @ James Joyce
Winner of "B" plays winner of "C" @ Dargan's
Finals - Tuesday June 20th
(5-11-06)
Playoffs to begin June 6th
Playoffs for THE CUP will begin on
Tuesday June 6th. This means we will have a one week break after the
final night of the season. This allows those people who are traveling
for the Memorial Day weekend a chance to enjoy their vacation.
This will be the first time we have played for the Cup in a year so I know
everyone is looking forward to it. With only 7 teams playing this season
we have only one Bye for the team with the highest winning percentage.
The final for the Cup will take place Tuesday June 20th.
The playoff schedule will be posted as
soon as the final night of the season is over and we can figure what
team gets the BYE.

Dennis Priestley coming to town again
Sir Dennis will once again pay us a visit
prior to his trip over to the Desert Classic at the end of June. We have
2 exhibition dates set up at this point. We decided this year to hold
one event in Ventura and one event up at Firestone Brewery in Buellton.
This gives a bunch of you a chance to play him twice and come up and see
the great venue at Firestone!
The first event will be in Ventura on
Thursday June 22nd and the Golden China restaurant. The Ventura league
are taking pre sign ups now but there are only a few spots left. Some
spots are being saved those who show up the night of the event. For all of the information on the event go to
http://vcda.org/Priestley-exhibition.html
The Firestone event will be held on
Saturday, June 24th at 1pm. Sign ups will be limited to the first 20
players. The event will be held on stage and we expect a very large
crowd for this event. I will be posting more information in the very
near future.

Website Back up and running
Wow. How we depend on our computers for
every day things. The dart site is no exception. Having to do the
Bullshooters on my old computer was no fun. and I had no way to update
the site. But now the site is back up and all of the Bulls have been
posted. Hopefully I will not have any other mishaps with my computer and
there will be no more delays. Lots of things to keep you posted on and I
will post more later. I just wanted to at least get the Bulls up for
everyone.
(3-7-06)
NICE SLOP! (or nice "Andy out"!)
Hey. I hit what we like to refer to as
"Nice Slop" on the first night of league this season. I put it on the
Bullshooter and my hopes were that I would get more from everyone
throughout the season. We all know that there are shots you make that
end up getting you MVP points that you surely didn't deserve. So why not
brag about it! Mine was a T74. I hit trip 20 and then hit an accidental
trip 18. After laughing about the 18 I hit another trip 20. Hence Nice
Slop!
So I was hoping that when any of you hit
something that gives you an MVP point or two when you truly weren't
aiming for it, why not write it down and let us know. I have seen many
very season and I always thought we should tell about it.
On the next scoresheet if you hit
something like a T34 when it was slop, make sure to note SLOP and tell
me how you hit it. I will include it on the Bull. Maybe we come up with
a special trophy for worst sloppy dart!
Also please note any "Andy out". This is
pretty much the same thing except it's an "out" you didn't intend. Like
trying for a 96 out and you are aiming at trip 20 only to hit a trip 18
leaving 42 and then you aim at 10 but hit triple 2 to leave 36 and then
hit double 18. That's an "Andy out".
(3-7-06)
ADO Regional
The Regional event will be held this
coming Sunday at 1pm at Dargan's. All of the regional qualifier winners
from Southern California will be there so it is sure to be a day of top
notch darts.
If you would like to play in the event
the cost is $110. If not, come on down and route on the SB guys that are
in it and help chalk a few games.
(2-23-06)
Firestone Blind Draws
We have been holding Blind Draw tourneys
every week on Monday nights at Firestone Walker Brewery in Buellton. The
turn out has gown every week and we now have a regular group of very
good players showing up. The competition has been at a very good level
so if you are looking to get in another night of darts, this is sure to
help pick up your game. Start time is 6:30pm SHARP. Get a carpool
together of a few guys and come on up. Great beer and food too. and we
have our own separate room in the back with our own CD player. Best dart
set up anywhere around. Hope to see you there soon!
(2-23-06)
ADO Qualifier
It's time once again for an ADO
Qualifier. This one is definitely worth attending as the winner will
qualify for the regional which is being held one week later at Dargan's.
You won't have to travel this time!
ADO Qualifier
Dargan's Irish Pub
Sunday, March 5th
1pm
$10 Entry fee
Round Robin 501
Winner gets paid entry into the Regional which will be held on Sunday,
March 12th at Dargan's
(2-13-06)
Valentine's Day Break
Enjoy this Tuesday eve with your special
someone and give your darts a rest! I'm sure we'll all be better off if
you do so. "Honey, I know it's Valentine's Day but I can't let my team
down". Yeah, enjoy sleeping with your darts! We'll save you the hassle.
But if you're jonezing to play, we have
the Open Blind Draw tonight (Monday) at Firestone in Buellton. 6:30pm
start time.
(2-1-06)
National ADO Points Posted
The yearly National ADO point totals have
finally been posted on the ADO site. This year some of us made it on the
list. I know I only got to play in 2 events last year and no ADO
Regionals so my points were low and I know the rest of us were in the
same boat. This year hopefully we will all end up higher in the
rankings. Below is a list of our members and their rankings in the
nation:
Phil O'Neill - ties for 272nd with 67
points
Erik Schiefen - tied for 329th with 56 points
Wayne Jessup - tied for 329th with 56 points
Mick Farrell - tied for 539 with 32 points

League Has Limped to a Beginning
After a couple of extra weeks trying to
get new venues set up and new teams going we decided to just push ahead
and start the league even though those things didn't get resolved.
Unfortunately we only have 7 teams total this season but at least we
have begun. Lots of bye nights so plenty of chances to spend time with
your families.
The new schedule has been posted. Click
Schedule at the top.
Let's make the best of this season and
hopefully by next season we have those things resolved and will be back
up to 12 teams again.
